The Problem

A situation frequently encountered by the professional computer investigator both on-site and in the laboratory is that of the platter locked hard disk drives used in standard laptop computers. This problem arises when a user has set a password on the disk drive itself, as opposed to the computer BIOS (which is easily overcome). The effect of this is to render the disk drive inoperable without the correct password. This is the case even if the drive is fitted to a different laptop computer.
